Fire of Holy Spirit

The Fire Of The Holy Spirit

A very important subject in Christianity that is misunderstood my many is ‘the fire of the Holy Spirit’. The fire of the Holy Spirit is the same as Holy Ghost Fire.  Many Christians either don’t know this fire or have wrong knowledge of Him. This fire is what many refer to as Holy Ghost Fire. Calling the fire Holy Ghost fire is not really but thinking that Holy Spirit is here on earth to destroy people with fire is a wrong idea.

God is full of love and doesn’t want people to perish. But many ignorant Christians have been getting themselves busy calling Holy Ghost Fire to come and destroy those they see as enemies. Is this a misconception or what? I want to help you understand this very important topic in this article.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Matthew 3:11 NKJV

John the Baptist was the first person to talk about the fire of the Holy Ghost. What he said was that Jesus would baptized those who believe, the Christians with Holy Ghost and with fire. Note that scripture very well, John didn’t say Jesus would baptize those who believe with Holy Ghost fire. John said Jesus would baptize with Holy Ghost and with fire. These are two separate things which we must not get wrong.

When a man becomes born again he becomes a Christian. When a man becomes born again he’s born into the Spirit of God, immersed into the Spirit of God. The moment he receives the Holy Spirit, he receives the person and the fullness of God’s person.

Born again, baptised into God

If a man receive Holy Spirit, at the same time he receives Holy Spirit he would also also receive baptism into the fire. The two happen together for every one who is new to the Spirit.

Those who are baptized in the Holy Ghost and with fire must consciously keep this fire burning in his life. You are to remain aglow in the Spirit by keeping this fire burning. Never let the fire go down. The word of God admonishes us:

“Do not quench the Spirit.” 1 Thessalonians 5:19 NKJV.

If the scripture warned us not to quench the Spirit, it is therefore important for us to know how we can quench the Spirit.

Holy Spirit, Don't quench his fire

To quench the Spirit is to be insensitive or disobedient to the prompting and leading of the Spirit. It is to resist His workings in and through you. The way to avoid quenching the Spirit is by keeping the fire we are baptized with burning in our lives. What then is this fire, which purpose is this fire serving in the life of the believer?

What then is this fire of the Holy Ghost? Many of God’s people have been acting in ignorance for too long. They have interpreted this fire to mean fire that consumes the enemies. You hear many of them shouting, ‘Holy Ghost…….fire’ repeatedly expecting the Holy Spirit to destroy their enemies. This is unscriptural, the Bible did talk about fire but John never said Holy Ghost fire. Holy Ghost is the same as Holy Spirit. He is a person and to be baptized in Him is to be immersed completely in Him.

Fire is not a person, fire is a thing and It is the effect of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the believer. No one is ever baptized separately into the fire after receiving the Holy Spirit.

The moment you receive the Holy Spirit, He begins from that same moment to work in you and through. He begins to make you willing to do the will of God and live to please Him alone.

The fire that the Holy Spirit ignites in us  is an unquenchable zeal for God. It is like a burning fire which the Holy Ghost ignite in our heart. This is a zeal and a strong desire for God. It is a desire to live for Him alone and to do only what He says. It is a burning zeal as of fire to pursue His plan and purpose and to fulfill it.

This fire  that keeps us aglow in the Spirit. It makes us detest everything that is contrary to the will, plan and purpose of God.

If this fire doesn’t burn continuously in the believer, he will become reluctant to do God’s will. This is why most people find it difficult doing what the word of God says. With this fire burning in you, there is nothing God says that’s difficult to do.

Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me. Psalms 69:9 NKJV.

For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, And was clad with zeal as a cloak. Isaiah 59:17 NKJV

Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.” John 2:17 NKJV.

For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” Romans 15:3 NKJV.

I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. John 5:30 NKJV.

  • The Holy Spirit ignites in us a zeal and desire for God. It’s a zeal fire, this is why it is called the Holy Ghost fire.
  • Love for God, His Kingdom, and people is another effect of this fire that the Holy Spirit ignites. No one who is born again, filled with the Holy Spirit and has this fire burning that doesn’t love God more than anything else. Whenever a man begins to find it hard to live for God, study the word of God, love the brethren, go to Church it is an indication that this fire is no longer burning as it should.
  • Desire to live and to fulfill God’s vision for one is another effect of the fire of the Holy Spirit in us. With this fire burning you just don’t desire to live for anything else than the purpose of God for you and to fulfill the vision He has given you.

It is high time we understood the truth of God’s word and began to walk in the light of the word. It doesn’t matter how long we have been living doing and saying the wrong thing, the day we discover the truth is the day we should begin to walk in the truth. Let’s stop shouting Holy Ghost fire expecting the Holy Spirit to come and kill some folks with fire. We all need to understand that the Holy Spirt loves people and doesn’t want people to perish but to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. Who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time I Timothy 2:1‭-‬2‭, ‬4‭-‬6 NKJV

Since the Holy Spirit wants all men to be saved, how do you expect Him to destroy people with fire? To destroy the people He wants saved with fire will mean Him contradicting Himself. Holy Spirit can’t contradict Himself,  it’s men who are rather contradicting His word.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. Matthew 5:43‭-‬48 NKJV

Praying and asking the Holy Ghost fire to destroy another person is biblically wrong.  We are supposed to love all our enemies. We need to understand that love is the only way to victory. Jesus had already given us victory over all enemies. We don’t need to kill our enemies to enjoy our God give victory and exercise our authority over the enemies.

Authority is not needed if there’s no one and nothing to exercise the authority over. Our enemies whether alive or dead can’t do us anything. They can’t stop us, we move forward continuous despite their opposition.

God is love that is what scripture teaches and the word makes it clear that the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of love, to have Him living in you means you have love in you, you do not need a separate spirit of love.

You need to understand that the fullness of God dwells in you by the Holy Spirit. All you need to do now is allow the Holy Spirit to work in you and through you and allow the fire He ignited in you to keep burning.

Keep aflame, let the fire keep burning and you will never be dry again in your life.

This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. Acts 18:25 NKJV

not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; Romans 12:11 NIV

The Holy Ghost is a Person, He is not a thing and He is not a feeling. He is a Person who comes to live in God’s children and to ignites in us a fire. This is what makes us Christian and different from every other person.
